Mining

The Los Bronces Development Project envisaged the construction of a new copper and molybdenum concentrator plant (flotation) with a capacity of 87,000 tons of copper ore. The works undertaken included building a new oil slurry transport system involving a 52 km/28” slurry pipeline from the Confluencia area (STP) to Las Tórtolas, as well as a 38 km/24” diameter aqueduct and a 20 km/24” replacement stretch for the existing pipeline.

The new ore slurry transport system included five new energy dissipating choke stations and four pumping stations with centrifugal pumps as well as vent and drainage points along the pipeline course. The main challenges of this project were not only about finding ways to cross tunnels and bridges but also about coping with harsh climatic conditions, as in winter there are heavy rains and frequent snowfall up in the mountains.

Location

Los Bronces is an open-cut copper and molybdenum mine. The ore is extracted, crushed and transported down a 56km slurry pipeline to the Las Tórtolas flotation plant, where copper and molybdenum concentrates are produced.
