Energy

The scope of the project covered the full range of work required for the electromechanical assembly of the Itaipú hydroelectric power plant, lying on the shores of the Paraná River, just 25 kilometers north of Foz do Iguaçu. With an installed capacity of 14,000 MW, the Itaipú hydroelectric power plant is a milestone project, both for Paraguay, which until then only had a small hydroelectric plant, and for Brazil, where it served to almost double energy generation capacity.

In 2016, Itaipú was the first hydroelectric plant in the world to generate over 100 million megawatts per hour (MWh) on an annual basis. Today, it is the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, responsible for supplying around 11% of Brazilian energy needs and meeting 88% of Paraguay’s consumption.

Location

The dam is situated near the Paraguayan city of Hernandarias, straddling the Department of the Alto Paraná on the western side, and Foz do Iguaçu, in the Brazilian state of Paraná, to the east.
