Tratayén - MEGA

Neuquén, Argentina

We are building a gas pipeline to double the supply of natural gas transported from Tratayen in Fortín de Piedra to the MEGA Separation Plant in Loma La Lata, across rocky terrain strewn with obstacles presenting all kinds of difficulties.

Oil & Gas

The Tratayén-MEGA Gas Pipeline project presented a number of difficulties due to the diversity and difficulty of the obstacles lying in the ROW which had to be resolved.

The 36”gas pipeline built by Techint E&C doubles the supply of natural gas transported from Tratayén in Fortín de Piedra to the MEGA plant in Loma La Lata. The plant adds value to natural gas through the separation and fractionation of rich gases into individual products. The idea is to recover ethane, which is the principal raw material for the Argentine petrochemical industry, and export liquid components to other markets.

Overcoming obstacles

  • Open crossing of the southern tributary of the Neuquén River

Construction of the diversion channel, trench excavation and assembly of concrete pipe. Some 52,000 m3 of soil were moved, while the total weight of the concrete pipe column came to 110 tons.

  • Subterranean horizontal crossing of the northern tributary of the Neuquén River and Provincial Route 7

A 48” diameter tunnel measuring 475 m in length was dug to install the gas pipeline.

  • Construction in special section for the Island

The company laid a 2-km pipeline section with a minimum cover of 3m in depth and continuous water filtering, requiring earthworks to move a total of 280,000 m3 of soil.

  • Ricardo Juan · Development Manager in Neuquén

“We’ve been working alongside our customer from a very early stage to evaluate all the different alternatives as they arose, because the business context was permanently shifting. Working together helped us to come up with ideas and envisage possible solutions to construction problems at the early stages of conceptual and basic design."

  • Guillermo Eyherabide · Head of Programming and Project Control

"From the planning point of view, we found ourselves dealing with a project that largely went according to plan, despite the challenges we faced during execution, particularly in the context of the pandemic."

  • Tiago Zurita Quadros · Project Manager

“This has been a really challenging project, highly complex in technical terms, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 situation. What we've achieved during the work clearly reflects successful project management: a team able to meet the initial objectives while adapting to the requirements of the current context and taking this in their stride."
