Erika Chávez Rodríguez is Head of Training and Talent Attraction in the North American Area. In this article, she shares some tips for successful teamwork: “It’s so important to respect that, in this company, we work with a very broad diversity of people in cultural terms, so we need to learn to listen and understand others in order be sure we’re all moving forward together.”
Erika Chávez Rodríguez has a degree in Business Administration from the Faculty of Accounting and Administration at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). She joined Techint Engineering & Construction in September 2019 and today is Head of Training and Talent Acquisition for the North American region. “My job is to monitor all the corporate and local training programs, and I’m in charge of recruitment for clerical positions in the Northern Area, both for headquarters and for projects”.
Before joining Techint, Erika had never worked in an E&C company before: she found that the most complex thing was "understanding the issue of timing for this kind of business, what specialized profiles looked like, and how much people moved between countries."
She says that “Techint is all about challenges! It’s a highly dynamic company where each day brings fresh challenges! We’re constantly interacting with people from different nationalities, which is very enriching.”
What she likes most about her job is engaging with people. "From my area, I know all the people joining the company, so I keep an eye on their development through the training programs, which is very gratifying," she says.
But things haven’t always been so rosy. During the two years of the pandemic, Human Resources had to work hard to transform training courses and take the recruitment and interviewing process online. "This was a period of major challenges for us, we had to find internal and external options enabling us to reach our objectives and get our internal customers to 'change their mindset’."
In terms of HR, one of the upsides of the pandemic is that it has pushed through the development and implementation of systems that, according to Erika, "are a great asset for managing daily activities, particularly when it comes to information control and decision-making.”
Erika shares some tips from her experience working in a team, pointing out that the key is ensuring that its objectives are properly defined, that people understand the needs of the business, and that they can draw up workable action plans. She adds that "it’s so important to respect that, in this company, we work with a very broad diversity of people in cultural terms, so we need to learn to listen and understand others to be sure we’re all moving forward together."
Her message to a young person starting their career at Techint E&C is about courage and vision: “You’ll have lots of opportunities for development, but it’s up to you how far you can go. Also, it’s a very dynamic industrial sector so don’t be afraid to tackle new challenges or move to other locations!”
