Green hydrogen for the industry
Published 19.4.2021
Good afternoon!
How are we approaching the energy transition at Techint E&C?
We’re making progress in the generation, transport and use of green and blue hydrogen, as well as in the capture of CO2 for different processes employed by the steel industry, Oil & Gas and electricity generation in Latin America, Europe and the US.
Towards a sustainable future: zero emissions
We’ve taken the first steps towards the application of green hydrogen on an industrial scale in the Italian steel sector. The goal is to decarbonize the Tenaris seamless pipe plant in Dalmine, Bergamo, Italy.
The initial phase of the project envisages generating hydrogen and oxygen using a 20 MW electrolyzer which has yet to be installed at the plant. In 2020, at Techint E&C we carried out the feasibility study and the CAPEX estimate for the project, and more recently, the FEED has been concluded. In the following months, we will be taking part in the next development stages.
Same challenges, different latitudes
Up in the mountains, over 4,600 meters high
Neither adverse weather conditions nor the COVID-19 pandemic have been able to halt work to build the 87-kilometer-long pipeline which will transport water from the Titire River to the Quellaveco mining complex in Peru.
As in all the works where we are involved, Quellaveco has presented its fair share of hurdles : such as how to build the pipeline across certain areas through the air, and how to avoid affecting the river Titijones and the Huacho wetlands. We designed two suspension bridges measuring 140 and 190 meters in length, respectively, to overcome these challenges. Currently, the special sections phase is making good progress, including assemblies on slopes of gradients up to 45º and on mountainsides, as well as on the wetlands crossings.
In numbers
+1,300 workers at the peak of construction
+55% completed of the work
Working underground
Assembling 1,200 tons of pipe without being able to use traditional lifting equipment, in the basement of the Hot Rolling Mill at the Ternium Industrial Center in Pesqueria, Mexico, was one of the more outstanding feats achieved by the 660 people who worked at full throttle during the piping phase.
Now the final stretch is in sight , the last stages of this project that will allow the customer to produce special grade steels for the automotive and white goods sector. There are currently 1,350 employees working on different work fronts, making progress with the construction of the transfer tunnel through which the steel coils will pass, connecting the new mill with the pickling process area in the existing plant.

Big Data has arrived for the construction industry and it’s here to stay!
