Construcciones y Prestaciones Petroleras S.A. achieved more than 4 million hours without lost day accidents. This milestone reflects the team's commitment and the implementation of effective practices that ensure a safe work environment.
In December 2024, Construcciones y Prestaciones Petroleras S.A. (CPP) achieved more than 4 million work hours without lost-day lost-time injuries in its operations in the Auca field in Ecuador. To reach this milestone, one of the main challenges has been the training of personnel who have no previous experience in the industry. In this regard, Aníbal Prado, CPP's Project HSE Manager, says: “We focus on promoting a culture of prevention through induction, specific training according to the profile of each position and identification of new personnel through green helmets for a more personalised support.” He adds: “This approach allows us to ensure that all employees are prepared to perform their duties safely.”
Clear and effective communication is also essential. “Daily pre-shift talks and spaces such as the monthly Stand Down reinforce our safety culture, ensuring that each employee understands and applies preventive measures in their daily activities,” explains Prado.
Álvaro García, Construction Coordinator in the Auca field, highlights the synergy achieved between the operation and the Environment, Safety and Health team. “The employees know the procedures well. We have achieved a balance that allows us to execute critical activities safely, permanently observing working conditions, assessing risks and taking timely action to ensure everyone's safety.”
For García, reaching more than 4 million accident-free hours is an achievement that goes beyond the numbers: “This success fills us all with satisfaction because together we contributed and worked to make it possible. This milestone is even more remarkable because more than 80% of the personnel come from the areas of influence of the project and, given the dynamics of the operation in which we have new personnel on a recurring basis, we can see that the commitment to safety is present from the first day of employment,” he emphasises.
Preventive culture on a daily basis
For Juan Lozada, HSE Analyst at Campo Auca, the key is continuous prevention in the field. “We focus on identifying risks, implementing safety measures and training staff so that they take ownership of safety in their work environment. Constant feedback and the creation of an environment of trust are essential for workers to report incidents and propose improvements.” He continues: “Achieving 4 million hours without lost day accidents is a reflection of the joint effort and this success motivates us to continue to strengthen our safety culture.”
From the work front, Shirley Yépez, an ironworker in the Auca field, also shares her experience: “I feel fortunate to be part of this team committed to high safety and quality standards and every day I am committed to continue complying with the established rules and procedures, ensuring that each activity is performed safely.”
“We must maintain the individual and collective commitment to safety at work, the achievement is very important, but it is not the goal; we must continue to work with safety permanently to arrive every day to our homes in perfect conditions,” concludes Álvaro García.
