Techint Engineering & Construction’s Steel Services division provides services around the clock at the Ternium Industrial Center in San Nicolás, province of Buenos Aires. Find out about all the tasks—over 70—that are carried out in compliance with the highest standards of safety and quality.
Thirty years ago, in September, Techint Engineering & Construction’s Steel Services area launched operations for the first time at the General Savio plant, thus diversifying its business. This article takes a look at the services that the company continues to provide to a crucial Customer.
With 17 production centers in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, the United States, Guatemala and Mexico, Ternium is the leading steel manufacturer in Latin America. Its largest plant in Argentina is the Industrial Center located in San Nicolás de Los Arroyos, province of Buenos Aires. This is also where Techint E&C company delivers a broad spectrum of services, distinguished by their adherence to top-tier international safety and quality standards.
Way back since the mid-‘90s, Techint E&C has had Steel Services teams working for the steel industry: Ternium, which is one of the Techint Group companies, is its largest customer in this segment. In total, the division is providing 74 different services at the San Nicolás facility, employing 400 workers.
Javier Tozzola, the Project Manager of Steel Services, explains that their tasks are about recovering, processing, and reintegrating waste and by-products into the steel manufacturing process, helping customers to minimize their environmental impact and enhance the sustainability of their operations as well as optimize the use of their resources. He adds: “You could say we are great at recycling!”
At the Ternium plant, Steel Services operates a sizable fleet of more than 140 pieces of heavy machinery, ranging from loaders with different capacities such as those used in mining, to off-road trucks, bulldozers, motor graders, excavators, backhoes and potcarriers, telescopic cranes and scrap handlers, among others.
The Steel Services team is in charge of two high-capacity processing plants: one that processes and recovers metals and slag, and another that produces a substance known as premix, an aggregate used as one of the raw materials in the mineral sintering process.
Scrap is made up of all kinds of different metal that originally came from different sources, subsequently recovered and reincorporated into the production process. Slag is delivered to the customer to be sold on, as it can be used to help compact road surfaces, fill in quarries, as well as an input for the cement manufacturing process, among other applications. The second processing plant generates a premix used to feed the blast furnace using various co-products.
The contract also covers additional services for the management of metals, slag, raw materials, and logistics. Notably, it includes the operation of telescopic cranes for plant maintenance and construction, while the fleet of 20 permanent cranes is supported by a dedicated team of around 50 professionals.
The Steel Services team is also responsible for maintaining internal roads and managing logistics at Ternium's international shipping terminal. “We assist with the loading and unloading of steel slabs, whether for export or arriving from overseas,” Tozzola says.
The Industrial Center operates its own service station, staffed by a team of 18 Techint E&C workers. Their role includes fueling all light and heavy machinery, as well as locomotives operating in the plant. The team also handles lubrication, equipment washing, and tire repairs.
The key to this segment is seamless integration into the customer’s operations. “We contribute our operational capacity. We’re another link in the steel production process,” points out Tozzola. Techint E&C's unique value comes from delivering consistently high standards of quality and safety, backed by international certifications.
Techint E&C is an integral part of the steel production process, contributing its high standards of excellence and professionalism. Through the synergy between the various units making up the Techint Group, the company reaffirms its commitment to driving Argentina’s industrial development.
