#WomenWhoBuild: María del Socorro Álvarez

Published 18.5.2021

María Socorro Álvarez has been with Techint E&C for 20 years. Today, as Head of Foreign Trade North America Area, she says that, although the road has not been an easy one, it’s worth it: “When you’re in a place whose values are aligned with yours, you’re in the right place”.

María del Socorro Álvarez wanted to develop her skills in line with the qualification she had earned at the National Polytechnic Institute: a Degree in International Trade, Foreign Trade, Logistics and Customs. And towards the middle of the year 2000, her great opportunity came knocking, thanks to Techint E&C.
But this was not an easy decision to take. Socorro, married with a son, lived in Orizaba, a city in the state of Veracruz, 275 km from Mexico City, where the company's national headquarters were located.
She remembers her mother’s words at that moment: “Go on, step up and accept the challenge. Go get your dream.” So that’s what she did. She took the challenge.

She’s adamant that although things haven’t been easy, her family has always supported her
as “knowing that as someone who loves her job is also a source of pride and satisfaction for
them.”
In addition, looking back over these 20 years in the company, there is something of vital
importance that trumps anything else: values. "When you’re in a place whose values are aligned with yours, you’re in the right place."
