Challenges, opportunities and innovation mark the mining sector in Brazil
Published 9.8.2024
The rapid growth in demand for minerals is driving investment and raising the country's profile in the scenario of the global energy transition. Find out how Techint Engineering & Construction is poised to be a strategic partner for the industry.
Mining is a crucially important sector today, and one which wields major influence over both national and global economies. Despite market fluctuations driven by external demand, particularly from China, Brazil continues to stand as one of the world's leading mineral producers. The country's vast array of mineral resources fuels numerous key industries, reinforcing its critical role in the global market.
Techint Engineering & Construction is well known for its expertise and in-depth understanding of the needs and challenges faced by the mining sector, and has consistently demonstrated excellence in providing specialized services ranging from infrastructure construction to the implementation of innovative technologies.
Data from the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) reveal that investments in the mineral industry are projected to reach USD 64.5 billion between 2024 and 2028. This figure marks a major upswing of some 28.8% compared to the previous projection of USD 50.04 billion by 2027.
In the first half of 2023, the sector recorded a significant increase in revenue, reaching some USD 21.8 million dollars, thanks to the positive outlook for trade in metals such as copper, nickel and iron ore.
The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) reinforced the message that mining has the potential to lead efforts to combat climate change and leave a sustainable legacy for future generations. Brazil has a unique opportunity in this context, with investment potential estimated at US$1.2 trillion by 2030, driven by the demand for strategic minerals for clean and renewable technologies.
As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, Techint E&C is continually working in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its commitment to comply with worldwide standards in the areas of community relations, environment, safety and anti-corruption.
What are the most popular ores?
· Iron ore: the main raw material used in steel production, it’s also employed in civil construction, in the automotive industry and in several other applications.
· Copper: a key electricity conductor, it’s used to make electrical wires, in pipes, electronic components and to manufacture metallic alloys.
· Aluminum: widely used in industry due to its lightweight and resistant qualities, it’s also employed to manufacture metallic structures, as well as packaging, automotive and electronic components.
· Gold and silver: in addition to being used in jewelry and decoration, gold and silver are also important for industrial processes, such as in the manufacture of electronic components and in high-precision technologies.
· Lithium: a vital component of rechargeable batteries, it’s used in electronic devices and electric vehicles as well as for renewable energy storage.

Check out some of Techint E&C most emblematic works in the sector below.
Ferro Carajás S11D
Located in the municipality of Canaã dos Carajás, this monumental project involved the construction and electromechanical assembly of the groundbreaking Truckless Mining System. By replacing the conventional transportation system using trucks with a conveyor belt system, this innovation not only ensured greater operational efficiency, but also contributed significantly to environmental sustainability. Given the remote and difficult-to-access location, meticulous planning was essential to ensure the timely execution of the project stages and meet all the customer’s requirements to its satisfaction. At the peak of work, there were 1,721 professionals working onsite, demonstrating Techint E&C’s commitment to excellence as well as its ability to manage large-scale projects.
C20+ Project
In November 2021, Techint E&C began construction of the seawater pumping system for the C20+ project in the Tarapacá Region in Chile. This is a crucial initiative for the Doña Inés de Collahuasi Mining Company (CMDIC) as it will extend the useful life of the deposit by another 20 years. Measuring over 195 km, the seawater pipeline system will pump 1,100 liters per second up to the mine, with potential for future expansion. Furthermore, Techint E&C is implementing innovative technologies at different points in its operations, including a fully solar-powered data center located at the construction site. With a solid commitment to sustainability, this project not only boosts economic development but also paves the way for the energy transition in the region.
SADDN Project
Techint E&C began work at the SADDN project in June 2023, building a desalination plant and an aqueduct in northern Chile for the Codelco mining company. This project marks a significant milestone in reducing continental water consumption, contributing to the ambitious goal of achieving a 60% reduction by 2030. Primarily, it features a reverse osmosis desalination plant with an initial capacity of 840 liters per second, which will in the future be expanded to up to 1,956 liters per second. The tasks encompass a range of activities, including marine works and water distribution systems for large mines. Beyond its environmental benefits, the SADDN project bolsters the local economy by generating jobs and contracting local services. This initiative underscores Techint E&C's commitment to sustainable development and regional progress in every community it serves.
“As a Techint E&C employee, I take great pride in being part of a team that consistently delivers exceptional results across numerous mining projects. Our dedication to overcoming challenges and achieving high standards of excellence has been fundamental to the company's continued success,” said Thiago de Oliveira, Business Development Director at Techint E&C Brazil.
Thanks to a solid commitment to safety, efficiency, innovation, and sustainability, Techint E&C has proven to be a strategic and reliable partner in advancing the mining market, which in turn stimulates other areas of economic development in Brazil.
