Chile: Promoting a sustainable and responsible relationship with the community of Tocopilla

Published 21.11.2024

The Northern District Desalinated Water Supply Project seeks to foster the development and well-being of the residents of the area through a series of initiatives.

Following extensive efforts to assess training needs in the Tocopilla community–where the Northern District Desalinated Water Supply Project (SADDN) is carried out–, 56 residents successfully completed the OS-10 Certified Private Security Guard course. The initiative was supported by Techint Engineering & Construction in partnership with the Municipal Labor Intermediation Office (OMIL) and Aguas Horizonte, as part of efforts to boost local employment opportunities

The 90-hour training course, which combined theoretical and practical modules, equipped participants with essential skills in private security techniques, self-defense, risk prevention, values and ethics, and first aid, among other areas. With this comprehensive training, graduates are now qualified to work as certified security guards under OS-10 certification, issued by Chile's supervisory authority, Carabineros de Chile.

These training courses are designed to be directly relevant to the realities of the Tocopilla community, aligning closely with the needs of the local job market.

“It’s so important to give back to the community we’re part of and help build a sustainable future,” emphasized Rodrigo Larralde Campos, Deputy Project Director. “With the growth in mining and the energy transition underway, we have a big role to play in growing a skilled workforce and boosting local economic development,” he said.

Freddy Quezada, Project Human Resources Manager, highlighted the initiative's impact, pointing out how it equips Tocopilla residents with essential skills for job training and placement. “I’m proud to see such strong participation in this course. It’s inspiring to see people stepping up and embracing these opportunities that can open doors to new careers,” he added.

Amanda Canales, Community Relations Specialist, expressed the company’s intention to keep building employment opportunities and improving quality of life for Tocopilla’s residents through ongoing collaboration with the municipal office. “This course is the outcome of dedicated teamwork and sector-wide effort, focusing on the needs of Tocopilla. We aim to create more job opportunities and, in doing so, enhance the quality of life for the people here,” she explained.

Employees join the local community to clean up the beach

For World Cleanup Day, project employees in Chile rolled up their sleeves and headed to El Salitre beach for a cleanup day organized by the Tocopilla Port Captaincy. They weren’t alone—more than 350 people from the community, other companies, local organizations, and students joined in to clear out trash and spread some eco-awareness.

The result? A fresher, cleaner beach for everyone to enjoy while the several kilos of collected waste were sorted for recycling or treatment.

Collaboration with a group of cancer patients

Uniting efforts with Aguas Horizonte and the Chilean Workers' Union (Fadechi), Techint E&C made a significant donation to the Cancer Patient Assistance Group (ADAEC, in Spanish) in Tocopilla, aiming to support those battling cancer in the community.

The donation included nearly 4,000 inputs and products, enabling ADAEC to extend its vital role in the community and make a meaningful difference in the lives of Tocopilla’s cancer patients, who number over 70.
