Hexagon Live: innovation, networking, and a success story

Techint Engineering & Construction participated in a conference organized by the industry's leading design software provider. The event was held in Dallas, Texas.
Discovering emerging trends and advanced solutions to implement within the projects, as well as connecting with developers and industry peers, were some of the highlights of Hexagon Live, attended by five professionals from Techint Engineering & Construction.
This regional conference, focused on North America, featured Techint E&C as the only representative from Latin America. Among the attendees were global companies such as Bechtel, Intel, Worley Parsons, Burns & McDonnell, Fluor, and Amazon.
The team attending the event included Pablo Witis, Electrical Design Manager, Lucio Mandrafina, Instrument Specialist Design Checker, Gustavo Rojas, IT Engineering Systems Sr. Manager, Walter Mosteikis, Electrical Lead Design Checker, and Gian Franco Ortega, IT Engineering Systems Leader, who was responsible for presenting the use of laser scanning in the C20+ project in Chile.
Ortega indicated: “The information gathered and the face-to-face interactions with our global peers enrich us in the search for new work methodologies. At the same time, being able to attend live sessions with the developers of the tools we use daily and exchange ideas and queries is invaluable.”
Experience
Techint E&C is using Leica laser scanner and point cloud technology for adjustment spools. This provides a solution to the problem by allowing the installation area to be scanned and an accurate three-dimensional model to be generated. With this technology, spools can be designed and manufactured with a precision that reduces the margin of error, significantly minimising the time and costs associated with correcting defective spools.
“Although we are in the implementation stage, preliminary results have been very positive. The laser scanner is widely used in the market, but its specific application for adjustment spools is quite innovative,” Ortega added.
The audience showed great interest in the presentation. “Gian’s presentation had a positive impact and generated numerous follow-up enquiries,” said Witis.
Cutting-edge software
Hexagon is a global leader in advanced software tools such as Smart 3D, which is widely used in engineering. In fact, Techint E&C is one of its major clients in the region.
The company organizes several conferences worldwide under the name Hexagon Live Series, where it presents new technologies and tools while various clients showcase success stories related to the application and utilization of these innovations.
Additionally, the event features Technical User Forums (TUF), designed for leading companies in the sector to discuss the Hexagon products they use and share valuable information. This year’s agenda included sessions on 3D Design and Visualization, CADWorx, Construction and Completions, EcoSys, Engineering and Schematics, and Information Management, among other topics.
Mosteikis highlighted that these forums are the most relevant part and remarked: “The experience from the previous year was so positive in terms of the information and contacts we gained (tool developers, partners, owner operators, etc.) that we concluded it is very important to participate each year.”
Mandrafina explained that the main reason for participating in the event was the need for networking. “Smart Instrumentation, a Hexagon product, is required by several of our clients. The largest international engineering companies attend the event, and connecting directly with the developers gives us a significant competitive advantage.”
