Ternium’s New Steel Mill Enters Its Final Construction Stage
Published 8.10.2026
At the Ternium Pesquería Industrial Center, Techint E&C is advancing a strategic project that combines engineering, construction and technology to support a new stage in Mexico’s steel industry.
The project encompasses multiple work fronts—including structures, mechanical erection, piping, electrical systems and instrumentation—and requires precise coordination to carry out highly complex operations. The parallel erection of structures and installation of mechanical equipment, piping and electrical systems requires continuous coordination among disciplines to prepare for the next stages of the project.
For Techint E&C, the project represents a new challenge within its track record of executing large-scale industrial and steelmaking facilities. At the same Ternium Industrial Center, the company participated in the construction of the Hot Strip Mill, a facility that required the installation of 25,000 tons of mechanical equipment, 15,000 tons of structures, 4,800 tons of piping and 2,000 kilometers of cabling.
One of the most significant advances at this stage took place in the Slab Bay, where the installation of several overhead cranes was completed. Each piece of equipment weighs 443.7 tons, and its installation requires particularly complex lifting operations.
The lifting of a 160-ton beam was also completed, applying the experience gained from the initial operations to optimize planning, logistics and erection activities.
Technology integration is also part of the execution strategy. For the first time during a mechanical erection operation on the project, Straightpoint Wireless Loadshackle technology was used, enabling real-time monitoring of loads during critical lifts and strengthening operational control and lifting safety.
Progress indicators reflect the scale of the work completed. The main towers account for 8,237 tons erected in the Reactor Tower, 2,753 tons in the ALCO Tower and 204 tons in HYTEMP. Mechanical equipment erection has reached 2,847 tons installed, while the piping work front has reached 90.5% completion, with 747 of the 825 tons erected. In electrical works, more than 106,000 linear meters of cable have already been installed.
At the same time, other key work fronts are progressing, such as the Process Gas Heater (PGH), where approximately 452 tons of ductwork and 900 tons of equipment have been installed, and the Lower Tower Plant (PBT), which has reached 374.46 tons of equipment installed. The Electrical and Instrumentation work front is also making steady progress, with nearly 50,000 linear meters installed.
The experience developed at Pesquería strengthens Techint E&C’s position in projects related to the transformation of the steel industry and the incorporation of more efficient production technologies.
