Building with Awareness: The Value of Foresight

Leadership that Inspires Prevention

In every Techint Engineering & Construction project, safety, sustainability, and excellence are not separate goals — they are a way of thinking. Alejandro Sarubbi, Chief HSE Officer, leads a team of more than 800 professionals — environmental specialists, safety experts, physicians, ergonomists, nurses, and technicians — all united by the same belief: to anticipate issues, prevent impacts, and ensure that every task is done right from the start.

“You have to radiate a culture of prevention,” explains Sarubbi. “Prevention means acting before something happens. Our challenge is to make sure teams get it right the first time — with no harm, no injuries, no accidents.”

A Commitment with Deep Roots

Recently, Techint E&C published its 2024 Sustainability Report, adding a new chapter to a story that spans more than three decades of commitment to environmental management, safety, and operational efficiency.

“The most important thing isn’t the report itself,” says Sarubbi, “but the day-to-day management behind every action.”

That management has deep roots. Back in the 1990s, Techint’s Environmental Unit was already providing support to various Group companies — helping them comply with legal requirements, characterize effluents and waste, conduct environmental impact assessments, and execute complex remediation projects. Over the years, that experience evolved into a culture that now guides every project and decision.

Engineering that Drives Sustainability

This vision is reflected in projects that face major environmental challenges. In Chile, for instance, where mining has depleted natural aquifers and the law requires the use of seawater, Techint E&C plays a key role in developing infrastructure for a more sustainable future.

The company has built pipelines that transport minerals from the mountains to the coast, and now develops aqueducts that pump desalinated water back to the mines. It is currently working on Aguas Horizonte — a project that includes a port, desalination plant, and aqueduct — and on Collahuasi, another large-scale mining initiative.

Each project combines engineering, technology, and environmental management to ensure essential resources are available without compromising ecosystems.

Certifications that Strengthen Preventive Management

Along this path, Techint E&C has gone beyond regulatory compliance, consolidating an Integrated Preventive Management System certified under five ISO standards:

  • ISO 9001 (Quality)

  • ISO 14001 (Environment)

  • ISO 45001 (Health and Safety)

  • ISO 50001 (Energy Efficiency)

  • ISO 39001 (Road Safety)

“Each certification pushes us to work better,” says Sarubbi. “It makes us more efficient, reduces consumption, minimizes impacts, and reinforces our preventive culture.”

In 2024, the company took another step forward by moving toward carbon footprint certification (ISO 14064), reaffirming its commitment to decarbonization and continuous improvement.

A Culture that Sustains Every Project

With 49 active sites — including construction projects, equipment yards, logistics centers, and offices — Techint E&C applies its preventive culture across all levels of the organization. Every action, from optimizing energy use to minimizing environmental and social impacts, reflects the same conviction: prevention is part of doing the job well.

“Our management system is sustained by people,” emphasizes Sarubbi. “Techint isn’t the machines or the buildings — it’s the people who make things happen. That’s why it’s essential for every employee to understand the ‘why’ behind each procedure. It’s not about following rules because a contract requires it; it’s because we believe in doing things right. In safety, because we want to go home. In the environment, because we care for the place we share.”

Knowledge that Leaves a Mark

More than 800 professionals in health, safety, and environment form part of this network. They design, support, and oversee field management, ensuring real-time information for agile and responsible decision-making.

“Each project challenges us to rebuild the system,” says Sarubbi. “Teams change, people are new, and the challenge remains the same: to pass on the values of prevention.”

This philosophy translates into concrete actions: nurseries for reforesting pipeline routes, reuse of water from hydrostatic tests, or composting organic waste to protect soils — initiatives that blend technical skill, innovation, and common sense.

A Legacy Built Every Day

Throughout its 80-year history, Techint Engineering & Construction has faced increasingly complex challenges with one constant principle: to do things right, combining operational excellence and sustainability.

“Projects today are faster and more demanding,” reflects Sarubbi. “Our difference lies in pausing, thinking, and acting. Thinking about how we use water, energy, materials; how we impact communities. It all adds up.”

This vision defines Techint E&C’s DNA: to build responsibly — integrating prevention and sustainability — with the goal of creating lasting value for communities and industry alike.
