Transforming futures: Volunteers in Action reaches Petacalco

Published 21.1.2025

The students of the Escuela Secundaria Técnica No. 75 Valerio Trujano and the Colegio de Bachilleres No. 35 in Mexico benefited from the renovation of facilities carried out by the colaborators of Techint Engineering and Construction's program.

A total of 70 volunteers, including Techint Engineering and Construction's collaborators and members of the community, joined forces to renovate the Escuela Secundaria Técnica No. 75 Valerio Trujano in Petacalco and the Colegio de Bachilleres No. 35, benefiting 295 students, through Volunteers in Action.

The initiative was prompted by the need to rehabilitate the institution, which suffered considerable damage as a result of Hurricane John in September 2024. The deterioration of the facilities posed a risk to the physical integrity of the students and compromised the quality of education.

At the end of 2024, volunteers were dedicated to various maintenance and renovation activities, thus improving the school's conditions for 165 students. Some of the actions carried out included painting classrooms, repairing ironwork, rehabilitating toilets, installing a motor pump to ensure water supply, as well as reforesting and installing fans in the classrooms.

Mayra Chávez, QHSE Officer, said: “It was an unique and emotional day. It filled me with joy to see the excited faces of the people who use these facilities on a daily basis.” Likewise, Julio Vega, Project Purchasing Leader, underscored the value of the activity. “Being able to leave in the memory of our children this altruistic work is priceless,” he pointed out.

As part of the Social Management Program, another noteworthy action was carried out: a donation of furniture to Colegio de Bachilleres No. 35, which included blackboards, desks, filing cabinets, laboratory benches and desks. Verónica Pureco, Project Human Resources Leader, commented: “This action definitely motivates and encourages both students and teaching staff.”

This initiative not only renovated the physical structures of the schools, but also reaffirmed Techint E&C's commitment to education and social development in the communities where its projects take place, ensuring a safer and more suitable learning environment for the new generations.
